I am the Reference Technology Librarian for the West Des Moines (Iowa) Public Library. As of last Wednesday, I’ve been on the job for 13 years. Yes, the same job, same job title (description changes at will). Is that a disqualification for being a Shover and Maker or a Mover and Shaker? I don’t know, but my job is constantly evolving, I largely get to make it up as I go along, I get to write books and articles and blog, and I have both a window and a door in my office. Would you leave?

My great joy is public service. It’s also what is turning me prematurely gray. I find a balance in my daily work, where I help the public – and others in the library world – understand technology by being just a step or two ahead of them, holding a flashlight and a map. I feel that I am helpful, and that is essential for my psyche.

My new blog is currently under construction, since my brother’s server, where it has been housed for years, has taken leave of its senses.

I exist on the InterTubes as either lalcorn or weez42. I’m also a paripatetic member of the Library Society of the World, and am delighted to learn from all its members. I welcome what Henry Nelson Wyman called “creative interchange” as a way to the divine. I also welcome geek talk and general silliness, as life is too absurd to take at face value.
