Kaitlyn Means
I’m Kaitlyn Means, MLIS, Assistant Librarian at the San Diego Zoo Library, volunteer for the SLA-SD Chapter Archives Committee, part-time SAT Instructor, full-time geek. I’m new to the field, have been a librarian for the past two years or so, and am trying to juggle Shoving and Making with paying off student loans.
Since I’ve been doing this, I’ve been trying change, learn, and do things a bit at a time, in my own way:
- I designed and published a brochure for the library
- I put our staff publications online as free PDFs
- I organized three huge book sales, one each year
- I created, distributed, and compiled results of a comprehensive survey of zoo & wildlife libraries worldwide (and I’m hoping to publish them!)
- I catalog all the books we buy, manage all our our database subscriptions, claim and track all of our serials & manage the collection across three zoo campuses
- I provide tech support to everyone who comes in the library, and teach my co-workers how to use technology
- I met a lot of cute friends
- I hang out on the internet

No kidding! I totally want to be a zoo librarian now. I’m sure there’s a downside, but there are furry creatures!
