Jessamyn West, still shoving after all these years
Hi, I’m Jessamyn West and I’m a rural librarian and I run a giant community weblog. I’m also a lifeguard.
The week before last I had nine people for drop-in time which is the most fun part of my job. Questions ranged from finding a way to play video files on Fedora Linux [answer: VLC] to a woman looking up a page about her on Wikipedia and lots and lots of little tech support.
Then last week I went to SXSW where I was on a panel about community moderation best practices with the moderators from YouTube, Flickr, Etsy and Current.tv. Very exciting. There were more people in the room than live in the small town where I work in the library (doing a slow motion Koha install). I also run librarian.net.
I was a LJ Mover and Shaker a long time ago. I’m happy to be a Shover and Maker and use the publicity photo I’ve always wanted to use.

Please tell us more about the panel you conducted; sounds pretty interesting (need to register with SXSW to gain access to their site). As a long-term community moderator (since 1994), I’m always interested in hearing about other best practices.
