I’m Jan. I’m an Associate Librarian (ref desk dweller sans MLIS) in a small busy library in a large county. Some 2008 accomplishments I am proud of include
introducing my supervisor to RSS, Facebook, and Twitter, and (mostly) only wincing on the inside when he friended and followed me;
convincingly arguing that Breaking Dawn counts as a “multicultural book,” as it includes vampires from Egypt, Romania, and Ireland;
tirelessly lobbying for GLBTQ programming, GLBTQ collection building, a Pride month display, and GLBTQ inclusion in the library’s diversity mission statement (I did this in 2007, too. Maybe something will come of it in 2009!);
filling in for storytime when our children’s librarian was absent without once accidentally breaking into “dirty Raffi” lyrics (“I’m gonna take, take, take my willy out,” etc.);
listening to professional conscience over political conscience during election, refusing to succumb to powerful urge to direct McCain/Palin supporters to fictitious polling places;
committing myself daily to learning as much as I can about librarianship and library service via blogs, articles, others’ conference notes, slideshows, and other freely available resources, as the cost of a more formal course of study makes me quake in my boots; and
if not blogging, having my adventures blogged about on a regular basis at Shelf Check, a webcomic by Associate Librarian Emily Lloyd, who unfortunately did not make the cut for Shovers and Makers this year. There’s always next.

Hey I love that comic strip. It’s really cool it is based on a real person.

Thanks! And, oh, alas, it’s not based on a real person. I wrote the S&M guys to ask if my fictitious character could nominate herself. :)
