Bess Sadler

Bess during her blue period
I am the Chief Architect for the Online Library Environment at the University of Virginia Library. For the past couple of years I have been unreasonably fixated on creating an open source next-generation OPAC that would allow libraries to search the contents of their institutional repositories alongside their physical collections. (I find that if you want to be obsessive about something, it helps to be very specific.) The fruits of this project have been an open source project called Blacklight (see http://blacklightopac.org for more info) and, as of today, an official this-isn’t-just-Bess’s-hobby-anymore service offered by the University of Virginia: VirgoBeta. Also, four people wrote about me for Ada Lovelace Day, which made me feel very special. My blog is called Solvitur Ambulando because I believe in practical solutions to real-world problems. I am proud to be a Shover and Maker in the library world. Get excited and make things!
